A hot water bottle, an organic cotton period panty, and a meditation session: my go-to menstrual routine
Slowing down, listening to yourself, taking care of your body and mind—your period in a menstrual cycle can be all of these things: intense, stressful, exhausting, depressing, or even painful. A good menstrual routine tailored to your needs is essential to help you get through this special time of the month and your cycle.
What do we mean by menstrual routine? While having your period is one of the most natural things experienced by many women since the dawn of time, certain habits and actions can help ease menstrual symptoms and make you feel better in your skin and as a woman.
Good intimate hygiene, a little exercise, and high-quality, durable period products (like certified organic cotton period underwear) can make a real difference.
The Jade model is a customer favorite. For very heavy menstrual flowthe Jade menstrual underwear is made of Oeko-Tex organic cotton 95% and features a wider gusset than other styles to help prevent any leaks possible.
Some must-have accessories for a stress-free period
The hot water bottle
This is our must-have #1! A hot water bottle works wonders when period cramps are especially sharp and intense! Today, many stores offer the classic hot water bottles (the most common and well-known). They deliver intense, deeply relaxing heat. Wrapped in a fleece or plush cover, they often have a cozy look. The downside? Handling very hot water can be dangerous.
To avoid any unfortunate accidents, you can always opt for dry heating pads. They come in various shapes and types, filled with wheat, rice, or cherry pits. Just pop them in the microwave for a few minutes and you’re good to go!
There are also electric heating pads, which have the advantage of being cordless. Once charged, you can turn them on whenever you want. They don’t require any setup or preparation time.
Heat relaxes the muscles in the pelvic area that are tense. A hot water bottle placed on the lower abdomen or even sometimes on the back is a great ally for all teens and women on their periods.
A relaxing herbal tea
A hot drink, ideally an herbal tea with relaxing properties (like chamomile), can help you get through those difficult hours or days of bleeding.
It’s best to avoid energy drinks with caffeine or theine, which aren’t recommended. The goal is to relax, not tense up muscles that are already working hard.
At organic stores or pharmacies, you can easily find special menstrual herbal blends made with chamomile, raspberry leaves, valerian, or sage. You can also go for your favorite tea—the goal is to treat yourself and find comfort.
The Lucie underwear has it all: thin, black, elegant, soft, comfortable, and organic! It’s perfect for a normal flow.
An oil to soothe pain
Finally, to help relieve the most intense period pain, cramps, and contractions, a plant oil massage on your lower belly can work wonders. Mix a few drops of essential oil with your favorite carrier oil. Or, you can always find ready-made solutions online or at the pharmacy!
Ylang ylang, fine lavender, and tarragon essential oils are the most commonly used against period pain. You can mix them with borage seed oil, which is known for its hormone-regulating properties. Borage is a small purple flower. You can massage yourself with this oil, but you can also consume the flower as an herbal tea or in capsule form.
Another option, evening primrose oil is known for soothing uterine pain. However, it is not recommended for people with epilepsy.
Meditation and gentle exercise during your period
Taking time for yourself, relaxing, meditating during your period—it's important to be patient with your body and to pamper it. We've already talked here about the benefits of exercising during your period.
Physical activity releases endorphins that help relieve pain and boost your mood. However, for some women, working out just isn’t possible. Heavy menstrual flow can leave your body feeling drained. Meditation in all its forms (breathing exercises, sophrology, etc.) helps you relax, de-stress, and unwind. Gentle yoga or beginner Pilates are also great ways to move your body a little and shake off negativity.
