Choosing the best period panty according to your flow is essential. A menstrual panty that’s not properly matched to your flow can have unpleasant consequences. A period panty with unsuitable absorbency will saturate too quickly, and you risk experiencing leaks.

Several criteria need to be considered to choose the best period panties. The intensity of your menstrual flow is one of the main factors—if not the most important. Louloucup is here to guide and support you so you can make the smartest, most informed choice for a smooth, trouble-free experience with your period underwear.

A few valuable tips for choosing the best period underwear

Your first period underwear purchases may feel a bit hesitant. That’s normal. It’s not always easy for some women to know exactly how heavy their flow is.

To help you choose, here are a few tips to follow:

  • Try to estimate or remember how many times a day you need to change your disposable period products (pads or tampons). Is it once a day, two to three times, or much more often?
  • Do you feel like your period product gets saturated quickly? Is your flow slow, heavy or very heavy?

  • Which disposable products do you usually use? Regular pads or super-absorbent tampons +++? That will give you a clue.

  • If you’ve already used a menstrual cup, you’ve had a very accurate idea of your menstrual flow. For example, over half a day, was your menstrual cup barely filled or half full? Did you feel the need to empty it often? How frequently?

  • Do you have a copper IUD? The IUD (Intrauterine Device) is a very effective contraceptive method, but it can make your periods quite intense and heavy.

  • Have you ever experienced leaks or stains on your clothes?

These various observations can greatly help you in your choice of menstrual panties. Then conduct a comparison of the best menstrual panties. This will help you refine your choice towards the ideal period panties.

A menstrual flow that is not constant

Important to know: your menstrual flow is not the same on the first and last day of your period. Depending on the woman, it peaks in intensity before tapering off. Over the bleeding phase, which lasts on average five to seven days, you might see the following pattern, for example:

  • two calm first days, then the intensity gradually increases,

  • two heavy days with a more intense flow, when your lower belly is quite bloated and discomfort or pain can be more noticeable,

  • followed by two days when the flow gradually slows down and eases off.

Also, your flow is not as heavy during the day as it is at night. At night, when you’re lying down and not moving, your flow slows and the volume is much lower than during the day.

You should keep these differences in mind when choosing the best period panties for your flow and your personal profile. Even if you have a heavy flow, consider buying one or two pairs of medium-flow period panties for the end of your cycle, for example. In short, try to plan ahead as much as possible!

The Mathilde very heavy‑flow period panty absorbs the equivalent of 5 tampons. It’s perfect for really intense days or for night‑time. With this one, you don’t have to worry at all!

Focus on the different types of menstrual flow

Menstrual flow is described according to its intensity. This makes it easier to offer products that are truly suited to users’ flows. Brands and manufacturers can therefore offer cups, panties and swimsuits with varying absorbency levels to match each person’s menstrual flow.

Intensity and nature are also two different things. Very liquid flow or thicker flow, flow with clots? It’s important to really know your menstrual flow in order to better understand your body. Learn more about your menstrual flow here.

Light menstrual flow +

A light menstrual flow is considered to be less than 30 ml of blood over the entire period. You only need one tampon per day. Your pad is barely marked by the end of the day. At night, lying down, you hardly move, and a panty liner is usually enough. A light-flow period panty will then do the job perfectly.

Good to know: light menstrual bleeding is called oligomenorrhoea.

Mia

Medium ++ menstrual flow

A medium or normal flow corresponds to between 30 and 50 ml over the whole period. Two to three tampons a day are enough. A good **sanitary pad** can easily last half a day.

Romy

Heavy flow +++

Heavy flow is considered to be between 50 and 70 ml of blood. A heavy flow requires changing your protection regularly for better comfort and to avoid saturation. This means using at least 5 tampons per day. In heavy-flow period panties, the absorbent layer is wide and extended, holding and locking in a strong flow without saturating.

fanny

Hemorrhagic or very heavy flow ++++

When the flow is fast, strong and intense, menstrual bleeding becomes hemorrhagic and exceeds 70 ml of blood. In medical terms, this is called menorrhagia. It is most often caused by a copper IUD. You feel quite tired and need to go to the bathroom very regularly to change your protection (every two hours at most).

FAQ – Which period panty should I choose for my flow?

Which period panty should you choose if you have very heavy periods with a copper IUD?

If you have a copper IUD, we recommend period panties with an extended absorbent panel that goes high up the front and back of the underwear. The goal is to cover both the pubic area and the buttocks. At Louloucup, we recommend the Clara panties, the Mathilde panties, or the Jade panties. They’re perfect day and night if you have a copper IUD.

During ovulation I get some discharge and even vaginal discharge – which period underwear should I choose?

To avoid repeatedly using polluting and often harmful panty liners, we recommend slipping on light menstrual underwear to absorb vaginal discharge and spotting. Menstrual thongs or tanga panties are ideal for this type of discharge. At Louloucup, we recommend the Chloé tanga or the Mia light-flow period panties.

I have heavy periods, how many hours can I keep my period underwear on before changing it?

If you’re wearing suitable period panties (with an absorption capacity equivalent to 4 or 5 tampons), you can keep your period underwear on for at least 6 hours without any problem. After that, it depends on your personal comfort, how damp it feels, etc. A Clara very-heavy-flow high-waisted period brief can be worn for at least 8 hours, i.e. a full day.
