A few weeks ago on Loulou, we talked about light menstrual flow and how practical light‑flow period panties and menstrual thongs can be in that specific case.
Today, we wanted to talk with you about heavy flow, very heavy flow, or even sometimes hemorrhagic flow. Because we know that, for many reasons, lots of women experience hemorrhagic periods, particularly intense bleeding, very heavy menstruation.
It’s not always easy to manage, day or night, at work, at school, during sports or at home. These menstrual flows and bleeds can be cumbersome and disabling in everyday life.
So, can washable period underwear or washable period panties really cope with a hemorrhagic flow?
Is the fabric absorbent enough to capture menstrual blood without leaking? Is heavy-flow period underwear just as discreet as light-flow styles, a disposable tampon, or a standard sanitary pad?
Let’s go over everything together. And along the way, discover our favorite menstrual products for heavy or hemorrhagic periods that keep you dry, leak-free and finally at ease.

Before going any further, it’s important to know your menstrual flow and what it’s like. Light, medium, heavy or haemorrhagic, it’s useful to identify it so you can choose the most suitable period underwear styles.
A period panty should first and foremost be chosen according to how heavy your menstrual flow is.
A menstrual flow is considered heavy when it exceeds 80 ml. To give you an idea, a menstrual cup can hold up to 25 ml of blood. We also talk about heavy periods when they last for more than 7 consecutive days.
To help you estimate your flow and the intensity of your bleeding, observe your use of sanitary protections. How many tampons do you use in a day? Do you need to change your protections very regularly to stay dry and comfortable? About every two hours? Do you notice blood clots on your pad or in your cup? Do you often find yourself with overflowing, saturated pads?
All of these signs can help you figure out whether you have a heavy flow or even a hemorrhagic flow. While very light menstrual bleeding is called oligomenorrhea, heavy bleeding is referred to by doctors as menorrhagia.
Want to know more about heavy periods? The Higham score method can help you.
There are many different reasons and causes that can explain a particularly heavy period flow.
You can have very heavy periods because of your contraception. The copper IUD (or copper intrauterine device) is a very convenient and highly effective contraceptive method, but it has the rather unpleasant side effect of causing longer, heavier and more tiring periods. This is not always the case, of course, and it tends to ease off a few months after insertion.
You may also have heavier-than-average periods if you have endometriosis.
You may experience heavy or very heavy periods if you have a fibroid or polyps.
Hemorrhagic periods can also be a consequence of a hormonal imbalance.
Polyps, endometriosis, fibroids—whatever the cause, you need to see a doctor and not let this situation drag on. Midwife, GP or gynecologist, book an appointment! It’s important to understand why you have hemorrhagic periods. There are always possible treatments and options. You don’t have to endure such unpleasant, hard-to-handle periods every month. Hang in there! 🩵
Period panties, or washable menstrual underwear, are an ally, a friend, an absolute essential that really saves the day if you have a heavy, intense, abundant flow.
Fed up with pads that leak and disposable tampons that dry out your vagina? Want to stay dry and stop dealing with leaks? Above all, do you want to stop spending your life in the bathroom and stressing about staining your clothes? In short, to experience your period more calmly and peacefully, without fearing leaks and stains?
Louloucup menstrual panties can handle even the heaviest flows! These period panties are ideal for managing particularly intense periods, but not only that. Louloucup styles for very heavy flow (absorption equivalent to 5 tampons) are also recommended for postpartum to manage discharge after childbirth, or to absorb light urinary leaks.

Heavy-flow panties have a pretty incredible absorbency capacity – they can hold the equivalent of 5 tampons. Their absorbent layer is dense yet thin. It extends across the front and back of the panties, capturing and locking in your flow very effectively.
Ultra-absorbent, our heavy-flow menstrual underwear is still surprisingly discreet and ultra-thin to ensure invisible protection, even under tight clothing. Extremely comfortable, you feel great: no bad odors, no damp feeling, no chafing, no visible lines.
You can work, go to class, stay home, or exercise without stress and with a lighter mental load!
We couldn’t talk about hemorrhagic flow without mentioning lochia!
Period panties – and menstrual lingerie in general – are a huge help, not only during your period. Heavy‑flow period panties are particularly suitable for managing and absorbing periods, but also lochia.
Lochia, those well-known heavy postpartum bleedings, are very familiar to new mums in the middle of the postpartum period. Lochia are blood loss and residual tissue that could not be expelled at the time of birth. It is therefore normal and natural for the body to eliminate them. Afterpains (contractions once the birth is over) help with better evacuation.
To manage this postpartum period as smoothly as possible, discover the Louloucup postpartum panties collection. It’s a selection of washable, reusable panties that are absorbent and comfortable to cope with even the heaviest bleeding.
It’s simple: the Clara very heavy-flow menstrual panty was voted best menstrual underwear of 2025! It’s a clear favorite with everyone! Able to hold the equivalent of 5 tampons, it’s one of the most absorbent panties on the market.

Very valid question! If your periods are particularly heavy, bedtime is often a source of anxiety at the thought of staining your sheets, pyjamas or mattress. You’re not alone!
