Want to stop polluting during your period? Thanks to durable, washable menstrual products (period underwear, menstrual cups and period swimwear), you can finally ditch single-use tampons and pads that can’t be recycled!

Having an ecological conscience, making a gesture for the planet while having your period, is now possible. And the good news is that it's not that complicated to adopt and use.

Today we explain how zero-waste menstruation (like menstrual cups and period panties) is both accessible, practical, and more economical. Not to mention that it’s good for the planet and your health. All positives!

A menstrual cup for daytime use

Being active all day, moving around, running, exercising, going to school or work with your menstrual cup is totally possible.

Using a cup to collect your period

This small reservoir made of medical-grade silicone (zero chemicals or toxins, only medical-grade silicone) holds your period blood optimally. Placed at the entrance of the vagina, against the walls, the cup doesn’t let anything leak. Teens and adults alike can use it without any problem.

The cup, or menstrual cup, offers a great deal of freedom of movement. It’s hygienic, practical, and comfortable. It’s especially a powerful ally for all athletes, and swimmers in particular! Yes, the cup is a perfect replacement for disposable tampons

Menopause is divided into three main phases: 1. Perimenopause: A transition period (2 to 4 years on average) marked by irregular cycles and symptoms such as hot flashes. 2. Menopause: Defined as the complete absence of periods for 12 consecutive months, confirming the end of fertility. 3. Postmenopause: The phase after menopause, when symptoms gradually ease but the risk of certain conditions (osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease) may increase due to estrogen deficiency.

At Louloucup, we recommend using the cup during the day. Ideally, we suggest wearing your menstrual cup for 4 to 6 hours maximum. That means it’s not suitable for overnight wear. At bedtime, we suggest switching to period underwear. To learn more about our amazing period panties, keep reading below.

Why only 4 to 6 hours? For two reasons:

you need to empty the cup regularly, of course,

then, just as with tampons that must be changed regularly, you need to change your cup (empty and wash it) to avoid any risk of developing toxic shock syndrome. This serious but rare condition can occur if blood stagnates for too long.

The menstrual panties for the night

Once evening comes, remove the cup, empty it, rinse it, and let it dry. To enjoy a peaceful and comfortable night, we can only recommend that you wear period underwear. Why? Because this period lingerie produces no waste, is durable, washable, and above all extremely reliable!

How does period underwear work?

There’s nothing very complicated about it. Period underwear or period panties have a super-absorbent layer sewn into the crotch. Depending on the style, this layer (often called a pad) is more or less extended. It can rise higher at the front and back of the brief.

This membrane has a high absorbency capacity without shifting or swelling. It can store menstrual blood without becoming saturated. Very often, and this is the case at Louloucup, period underwear is categorised according to the intensity of menstrual flow: light, normal, medium-heavy or very heavy.

To give you a concrete example, our heavy or very heavy flow period panties have an absorption capacity equivalent to 5 sanitary tampons. With these models, there’s no risk of leaks!

How can I be sure my period underwear won’t leak at night?

At night you’re lying down. On your back or on your stomach, you’ll stay in the same position for a long time. The blood will tend to flow in the same direction. You need to be sure of your period protection to avoid any stains on your pajamas or on the sheets!

As mentioned earlier, we can only recommend using period panties with a very wide absorbent area to cover all bases, especially if you have heavy or very heavy periods. They’re a great alternative to sanitary pads.

FAQ – zero-waste periods

Which period products are zero waste?

These days, you have options! You no longer have to choose only between traditional pads or disposable tampons, both of which are polluting and harmful to your health!
You can choose a menstrual cup, period panties, a menstrual sponge or even a menstrual disc. These period protections have the advantage of being washable and therefore reusable. They’re eco-friendly, last for years and don’t produce waste or pollution.

How do I properly care for and extend the lifespan of my zero‑waste period products?

Both the cup and period underwear need careful maintenance to ensure they last a long time. For the cup, make sure you rinse it well with water and a mild soap, and remember to sterilise it regularly. Finally, every three to six months, you can deep-clean it. For period underwear, there are three non‑negotiable rules: rinse immediately in cold water, wash gently at 30°C on a short cycle with a non-greasy detergent, and air-dry away from any heat source.

Are zero-waste periods really possible?

Yes, absolutely. Buying durable, reusable menstrual products is an investment, but it quickly pays for itself. Zero-waste, non-disposable products like menstrual cups or period underwear are truly eco-friendly alternatives to conventional menstrual products.
